Latex allergies can be life-threatening

  • The first report of a latex allergy was in 1979 when Dr. A.F. Nutter reported a case in which latex exposure led to hives. Subsequently, this potentially life-threatening allergy has become more common.

Experts suspect that latex exposure at an early age and repeated exposures to latex may be the cause.

Premature babies are exposed to latex very often and patients who have repeated surgeries in the first year of life are at a particular risk for developing this allergy. It is also known that health care workers who are repeatedly exposed to latex may be more prone to develop allergies. (Approximately five to 10 per cent of health care workers will experience a latex allergy at some point).

The allergy is caused by the protein contained in latex derived from a rubber tree. The species known as Hevea Braziliensis is most often implicated.

The more common sources of allergens related to this protein in latex are: latex gloves, balloons and condoms.

Other sources of natural rubber include: erasers, rubber bands, elastics in garments, hot water bottles, pacifiers, swim goggles, Halloween masks, dental dams, bandages, adhesive tapes, stethoscopes and intravenous tubes. Reactions to these products are less common than latex gloves.

I have had a holter on for almost 24 hours and will be removing it soon. How do I remove the adhesive residue from the pads and also from the tape? I always get a rash and even blisters from it. Soap does not remove it, alcohol does not remove it.

Kerosene will do the job, wash with soap after rubbing off residue.
