Going on vacation? Prepare your garden first

  • From old-fashioned to high-tech, there are a lot of ways to keep your lawn and/or garden properly hydrated while you’re away.

    First, check the forecast. If rain is likely during your vacation, you may not need to do a thing, although gardens typically need 1 to 2 inches of moisture a week to stay healthy, says Matt Armstead, creator of the gardening app Sprout it.

    “No matter what, make sure you water your garden very deeply right before you leave,” he says. “Soak it thoroughly several times in the days leading up to your departure.”

    If rain’s not likely, or you’re going to be gone for more than a few days, a timed sprinkler or drip irrigation system is a better solution.

    Make your own by poking a few tiny holes in a milk jug and setting it in the garden near the base of your plants. Holly Jo Anderson, a 48-year-old gardener in Plymouth, Minn., goes even more low-tech, poking holes in a gallon-size plastic baggie filled with water and hanging it over her flower pots.

    The Best Laundry Basket (and Hampers) | The Sweethome

  • We considered more than 50 models, searched out reviews of laundry baskets and, after finding none, performed our own testing to determine that the Sterilite is the best laundry basket you’ll find. The competitors were narrowed down from hundreds of online reviews on more than a dozen sites to a few dozen contenders. The remaining ones were evaluated in-store to determine how much they can hold, how the handles feel and how sturdy the construction is. After eliminating a few due to ergonomic and build quality concerns, the final competitors were purchased and used in the home for two months to see how well they held up to constant use and abuse. After 20 hours researching and testing models, we decided the Sterilite is the best laundry basket for most households.

    Who should buy this?

    If you’ve got a laundry basket that holds all of your laundry and isn’t falling apart, you probably don’t need to replace it. Wait for it to fail first. But if you’re still transporting all your clothes from the dryer in a sack that wrinkles them, it’s time to move to a laundry basket.

    i have a pattern for like say a lion that is 18 by 22 holes and finished patt comes out to about 4 1/2 inches but i want it bigger like 90 by 150 holes to make a wallhanging instead of an ornament, how can i proportionally enlarge the pattern or a basket

    I know that you can double it and make it 36 X 44 but you would have to experiment to make it larger than that. As an example I did this {I have to put in periods to keep them separated}
    X doubled would be XX to make it four times larger XXXX
